Freenet is probably not currently well suited to the kind of real-time
communication required by an IM system. We do have proposals for a
publish-subscribe system that could accommodate this very effectively,
but these are bluesky at the moment.

Here is an email discussing our plans as of two years ago, although
note that since then there have been some fundamental changes to
Freenet's architecture (ie. the whole darknet thing):
